About these Arrangements
Christmas 4 Guitars originated as a small collection of ensemble pieces for use with beginning guitar classes. Over time the idea grew into the present two volume collection. Our goal with these arrangements is to give guitarists, teachers, and ensemble coaches a trove of moderately easy pieces to choose from whenever Christmas music is desired. The arrangements are intended for four players, but also work quite well for just two or three. The edition is laid out so that there are no page turns, and except for the guitar one part, stay in first position. There are only single lines for each player, except for a few natural harmonics in "O come, O come, Emmanuel". To make reading easier, guitarists 1 and 3 share a staff as do guitarists 2 and 4. This also allows the arrangements to be played as duets by more advanced players while keeping the parts interlocked.
For most of the pieces we have given not only the traditional harmony but a modest variation for variety and interest and players are invited to customize these arrangements in any way they would like, such as adding other instruments or voice.
We're including the name of the arranger for each piece, but would like you to know that this project was a group effort, a collaboration we three enjoyed.
About the Arrangers
Manley Mallard, born in Bennington, Vermont, studied guitar with Manuel Fraguela, Glenn Caluda, Christopher Harlan, and Steve Schenkel. He is currently on the faculty of Millikin University and is the coordinator of the guitar studies program. He teaches both classical and jazz guitar and directs guitar ensembles. Mr. Mallard holds degrees from Shenandoah University, Kent State University, and Webster University.
Glenn Caluda is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He has studied guitar with Aaron Shearer, Loris Chobanian, Jesus Silva, John Marlow, and Paul Guma. Mr. Caluda is professor of guitar at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. His published works include compositions and arrangements for guitar solo, guitar with voice, guitar with flute, guitar ensemble, and children's choir. Glenn Caluda, with his wife Elizabeth Caluda, regularly present concerts of little-known 19th century works for guitar and piano. He holds degrees from Louisiana State University and the University of Maryland.
Joseph Mayes is currently on the faculty of Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey where he teaches music history, classical guitar, renaissance lute and related ensembles. He has studied guitar with Andres Segovia, Jose Tomas, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Glenn Caluda. He regularly performs recitals on renaissance lute, archlute, vihuela, classical guitars from the renaissance, baroque, romantic (19th Century) and 20th Century both solo and as part of the Mayes Guitar Duo which consists of himself and his wife Kathleen Mayes. In addition to playing the guitar, Mr. Mayes has become a skilled guitar builder – most of the instruments used in his concerts are of his own construction. He holds degrees from Thomas Edison College and Shenandoah University.
