About this Arrangement
The perfected Classical style of the late eighteenth century owes more to Franz Joseph Haydn than to anyone else. He assimilated the past and enriched the spare mid-eighteenth century style with elements of the late Baroque and Romantic impulses of the sentimental style and the "storm-and-stress" movements. His personal development was long and laborious, marked by several emotional and stylistic crises. His art is characterized by the union of sophistication with honest craftsmanship. Haydn may be seen as the first truly universal composer of modern times. His genius grew out of perseverance and hard work. He was respected by members of all social classes, and admired in many lands. His fame not only spread throughout Europe but also across The Atlantic Ocean. The popularity of his symphonies and The Creation was a strong and vital influence on the development of musical life in the United States. Haydn was one of the most prolific composers in history. He wrote 52 piano sonatas, 104 symphonies, 83 string quartets, plus concertos, chamber music, choral works, 23 operas, Masses and 4 oratorios. This Sonata is an early work and so is almost certainly written for harpsichord. The first movement is so stringent in its adherence to the sonata allegro form that my colleagues in the theory department of my university use our recording as an exemplar. The second movement is something of a throwback to the baroque style. The Rondo gets the "cute" award. Joseph Mayes - 2009 Arranger Joseph Mayes is currently on the faculty of Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey where he teaches music history, classical guitar, renaissance lute and related ensembles. He has studied guitar with Andres Segovia, Jose Tomas, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Glenn Caluda. He regularly performs recitals on renaissance lute, archlute, vihuela, classical guitars from the renaissance, baroque, romantic (19th Century) and 20th Century both solo and as part of the Mayes Guitar Duo which consists of himself and his wife Kathleen Mayes. In addition to playing the guitar, Mr. Mayes has become a skilled guitar builder – most of the instruments used in his concerts are of his own construction. He holds degrees from Thomas Edison College and Shenandoah University.
