
Rex Willis, Classical Guitar, Composition and Music Theory teaches at State College of Florida. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music composition from Florida State University, and studied with world-renowned guitarists Bruce Holzman, Pepe Romero and Christopher Parkening. While attending FSU he participated in master classes with legendary composer Aaron Copland. In addition to faculty work with the Stetson International Guitar Workshop, Willis has taught at New College in Sarasota.
A published composer, Willis' music has been performed all over the world by many of the world's leading guitarists which recently includes virtuoso Ana Vidovic on her 2010-2011 world tour. He has written the film scores for several award winning independent movies, including two for One Day Films of Tampa. His original music has been reviewed in Classical Guitar, Sound Board Magazine and other publications and has been called "accessible…skillful…brilliant…powerful…seductive…an absolute gem of a piece…highly desirable…". In addition to writing the music for the musical "¡Ybor!", Willis has written the book, lyrics and music for the upcoming musical "Scavengers".
As a guitarist, Mr. Willis has been a featured performer with the Florida String Quartet (Sarasota Symphony affiliation), the Sarasota Pops, the Artist Series of Sarasota, the North Port Orchestra, the Miami International Guitar Festival, the Brno International Guitar Festival (Czech) and the Gwinnett Philharmonic Association Concert Series (Atlanta).
Willis' guitar students frequently take top honors in the Florida Community College Symposium and the Florida State Music Teachers Association competitions.
Willis' music directing and conducting credits include: ¡Ybor!, The Gondoliers, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Boy Friend, Into the Woods (Fall 2010) and the guitar orchestras at The Stetson Guitar Workshop, the Brno International Guitar Festival and the Florida Community College Symposium.
One of Florida's most original and award winning String Quartets, M.O.B., Musicians Out of the Box, commissioned Willis in 2009 to write original music to accompany the dramatic narration of the popular children's story The Tortoise and the Hare for their upcoming CD, Music Tales II. Their inaugural CD, Music Tales, won the N.A.P.P.A.'s Gold Award for family programming.
