The Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninoff is from a set of pieces (op. 34) for voice and piano. It is the only work of the set without words, being a pure vocalization. This hauntingly beautiful piece has been arranged for many different combinations and in many keys. The present arrangement for four guitars (or larger guitar ensemble) is presented in the original key of c# minor. The solo can be performed by voice or any sustaining instrument of appropriate range e.g. flute, violin, oboe, mandolin, etc. Additional parts have been included for soprano guitar (sounding one octave higher than written) and contrabass guitar (sounding one octave lower than written). These parts do not replace the first or fourth guitar parts but will greatly enhance the texture when performed with a large guitar ensemble.
