An Etude’s Etude is written as a preliminary study to prepare the right hand for the eventual playing of Heitor Villa-Lobos’Etude No. 1. I have found that the most difficult aspect of the arpeggio in this etude by Villa-Lobos to be the i-a-m-a-i-m sequence, so consequently in An Etude’s Etude, I have utilized that pattern for all of the arpeggiated chords in the entire composition.
I have provided two preliminary right hand preparation exercises that will help the guitarist develop control and coordination for the technical and musical execution of An Etude’s Etude. I recommend that the student play the entire chordal progression with these right hand patterns before playing the etude as written.
