In 2009, I was driving in a rainstorm through the majestic Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain towards the city of Oviedo. As the twisted roadway rose and fell, ventured through tunnels and clouds, it made me feel like I was riding a massive roller coaster. A few days later, when leaving Oviedo, the weather turned sunny and clear, and that same mountain range revealed itself in a glorious mix of shimmering granite peaks partially wrapped in radiant green. Now completely transfixed, my mind sprouted musical motifs that expressed my feelings about this earthly spectacle. While driving, I literally started writing musical sketches on scrap paper. That is how this music was born. I eventually took those sketches home and composed El Camino a Oviedo. It is dedicated to my colleague and friend, cellist Natasha Farny.
