The traditional English folk song Greensleeves dates back to 1580. It's safe to say that it was a smash hit as more than half a dozen versions were registered at the London Stationer's Company that same year. The tune was a natural fit for the lute and by extension the modern day guitar. It continues to this day to be one of the most famous melodies ever written going far beyond what so many of us recognize as the Christmas tune "What Child Is This".
With so many existing arrangements the prospect of a modern day version should and must include something new. This three and a half minute work, not quite a theme and variations, begins with a slow introduction and states the melody in the traditional manner with some harmonic variation. It then moves to a highly energetic jazzy frolic that falls easily on the guitar and is a blast to play!
