Woodwind Odyssey Veritate Winds Sydney Hodkinson

Available on Apple Music/iTunes

This premier recording of wind works by Sydney Hodkinson is an aural odyssey of passion, frivolity, reverence, and joy, filled with reflections of colleagues for whom the pieces were written, and composed solely to exploit their artistic skills and technical proficiencies.

Odyssey's first diversion, Tsatskes, is the oldest of the pieces represented, written in 1984 during Hodkinson's tenure at the esteemed Eastman School of Music for the now legendary artists Stanley Hasty (clarinet), Richard Kilmer (oboe), and David VanHosen (bassoon). The demands on the performers are many: technical wizardry, tonal perfection, and artistic integrity are integral in each of these movements. All of the material was derived from the opening tutti statements; structural designs are often simple in the extreme. The creative scoring and tonal melding of the oboe, clarinet, and bassoon in these vignettes is fresh, haunting, reflective, and vibrant.

Retirement from the Eastman School brought Hodkinson to Ormond-By-the-Sea, an enchanting community north of Daytona Beach, Florida. It was not long after his arrival that Dr. Hodkinson was approached to teach composition at Stetson University. He agreed, and the remaining pieces were written for Stetson's resident faculty woodwind ensemble, Veritate Winds.

With a rich history of national and international performances, Veritate Winds embraces music written for woodwind quintet, quartet and trios; exposing audiences to less-frequently performed woodwind repertoire and promoting the chamber music experience through recitals, clinics, and master classes.
